ARMOR OF GOD
Truth and Righteousness

By Linda Sedrick Pearson

Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness

Two pieces of the whole armour of God are mentioned in this verse:

  • Truth
  • Righteousness
It is interesting to find that these are the first two pieces of armor mentioned in the study of the armour of God. Let's examine this further.

In John 14:6 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." You must accept Jesus and be saved. Jesus is the only door. John 10:9 states: I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Your loins are to be "girt about with truth." The loins, according to Webster's New World Dictionary (1965 Edition), is "the lower part of the back on either side of the backbone between the hipbones and the ribs. The hips and the lower abdomen are regarded as the region of strength, procreative power, or unseemly nakedness." If we take this as the meaning of the loins in Ephesians 6:14, and we are to have this area "girt about with truth", and Jesus is the Truth as the Bible says, then Jesus is not only protecting some very vulnerable parts of our bodies, but He is also covering our nakedness. It would not be possible for us to stand before God stripped and exposed. We would not be able to withstand the devil if our nakedness was not covered or our vulnerable parts were unprotected. But, when we put on this piece of armour, then we don't have to worry because that area of our lives and our bodies are protected.

Put on the Truth of Jesus Christ. Cover your nakedness and your vulnerable parts with Jesus Christ. Accept Him and wear Him every day of your Christian walk.

The next part of the armour in Ephesians 6:14 is the "breastplate of righteousness."

Matthew 6:33-34 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Romans 3:24-26 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, righteousness means "to be morally right, to act in a just and upright manner." This describes Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is just and He is morally right. It is through His righteousness that we can stand before God. Romans 3:10 "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one." Only through the righteousness of Jesus do we have the right to stand before the throne of God, the Father, the Almighty.

Philippians 3:7-11 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

Righteousness is not only being morally right and just through Jesus Christ, but according to the above verse, it is also faith in Jesus Christ. Our faith (righteousness of Jesus ) is to be put on when we put on the breastplate. The breastplate is the piece of the armor that covers the back, chest and upper abdomen. The heart, lungs, stomach and upper intestines are all protected by the breastplate of righteousness (our faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord). By having on the breastplate of righteousness, the tender heart is protected against the devil, as well as the back. The devil can't sneak up on you and catch you unaware if you wear your faith daily.

So, put on Jesus Christ. Girt your loins with Truth and put on the breastplate of Righteousness--faith in Jesus Christ.

Remember, this is not the whole armor. These are just two pieces of the armor. These two pieces cover the chest, back, hips, and cover our nakedness.

Stand strong in the covering of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6

(King James Version)
11. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
